I think for me this also has to do with the fact that I have been in the Greek part of the island of Cyprus. As you can see in the story of the foreign influences in the Maltese culture Greek families moved to Malta in the Roman period. They also had influences on the Maltese culture, so that is why they have the similarities.
Also in the history of the two island they both had lots of different invasions from the same countries and groups. These will influence the culture in some way that seem similar.
Another reason it the location of the islands, because they are both Mediterranean islands. You can see this back in the Mediterranean lifestyle. The Mediterranean lifestyle means that you have the perfect balance between work, leisure time, family and food. You see that they fully enjoy their life. This is what is important to them and you see that back in the lifestyle of the Maltese and the Cypriots.
